The Locke Mills Union Church will hold a combined yard sale and craft sale on Friday and Saturday, August 15 and 16, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will also be a bottle drive during the same times, so gather up your returnables and bring them by to benefit the church. If you’re interested in having a table at the sale, please contact Rosie MacArthur at 207-357-4940.
Rosie MacArthur is also offering country line dancing lessons every Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 at the Locke Mills Union Church. The cost is $5 per lesson, and there’s no need to pre-register; just drop in. The class welcomes all levels, including beginners, and if Tuesdays don’t work for you, or you want even more line dancing in your life, Rosie is also offering lessons on Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church at 75 Main Street in Bethel.
The Greenwood Historical Society on Main Street is open on most Saturday mornings from 10 until noon this summer. Stop in to see the new exhibits, including Blaine’s Corner, dedicated to the memory of Blaine Mills.
We survived our day at Santa’s Village on Monday. It was hot, but there was a pretty good breeze and enough shade to be found to make it fairly comfortable. And, for the first time in the five years we’ve been going with granddaughter Lila, there was no rain, not even a quick shower.
As an experienced Santa’s Village visitor, Lila went prepared with two mental lists—“Must Do” and “Time Permitting.” We arrived shortly after 11:00 and stayed until the park closed at 5:00, and she was able to get through everything on her “Must Do” list, which included the carousel, the Log Flume ride, the new Midnight Flyer rollercoaster, and Poogee Penguin’s Spin-out Coaster ride, as well as the requisite visit and photo with Santa Claus and plenty of time spent at the water park. But just about everything on the “Time Permitting” list had to be deferred to next year’s visit, when we’ll try to get an earlier start and make it to the park shortly after they open at 9:30. It was a very long day, especially for the grandparents!
August first is a big day in our house, as it’s both Tony’s and Will’s birthdays. Will is turning 35 this year, and Tony is turning…well, quite a bit older than that. On July 31, 1990, when Will was already a couple of days overdue, I was determined that he would be born the next day, on Tony’s birthday. So I mowed the lawn at home in the morning, then walked around North Pond in the afternoon, and all that exercise paid off with his arrival on August first. I think that was the only year that Tony missed out on having lobster on his birthday, but he didn’t seem to mind.
